I can’t help but admire the dazzling light shows in Pueblo each year. It’s more than just a bunch of lights haphazardly thrown together. It’s a deeply rooted tradition spanning back several decades. It all started when Pueblo was a bustling, thriving town, dating back to the late 1800’s, early 1900’s, when Pueblo was a booming town. 

Pueblo’s holiday lights began as light displays, old lantern lights, like something out of Dickens ” A Christmas Carol”, leaving a nostalgic feeling of the holiday spirit of Christmas past. As a young child in the late 60’s and early 70’s, I can recall the Christmas lights, decorated light posts, strings of bright lights crisscrossing our Downtown Main Street. Store window displays, like those in old movies of Christmas past. Scenes like Santa’s North Pole, Gingerbread Villages Nativity Displays, and even Snowmen scenes, all made their appearance in those years. Every display held a scene of Christmas Magic. Memories of  the melodious strains of Christmas music, sung by Victorian Carolers, in charming garb, wafted through the air, as they strolled the bustling sidewalks  in their Victorian attire. The spirit of Christmas was alive in those days of past Children bundled in warm coats and scarves, eagerly anticipating their visit with Santa, eyes sparkling with Christmas Magic  as children eager to visit Santa

But here’s what really amazed me. As we entered the new millennium, we started harnessing modern technology to elevate our holiday light shows. Synchronized music and light displays burst onto the scene. Taking a stroll down any given neighborhood became a whole new sensory experience. Houses were not only decked out in lights, but they were also playing holiday tunes that synced up with the twinkling displays. It felt like you were stepping into a musical holiday wonderland!

Popular Annual Light Displays

Every year, in the magical Christmas spirit at the Pueblo Zoo, this annual light display takes on a life of their own. These are not mere twinkling bulbs; they’re grand spectacles that have attracted thousands of visitors, over the years, creating traditions, and bringing joy to many, young and old alike.
The Pueblo Zoo Electric Critters . It’s a sight to behold; an intricate labyrinth of lights weaving through candy cane lanes and glistening snowmen that seem to come to life. Electric Critters  swept the city in the 1990s(1992) with its decorative glimmer, igniting Pueblo’s  now, widely recognized tradition of holiday light displays. Today, this whimsical layout still remains the talk of the town and a favorite amongst locals and tourists alike.

Modern times also brought new fan-favorite events such as the Court House Lighting, which began in 2001, after 9/11. Former County Commissioner, Matt Peulen, wanted to do something to bring our community together. Imagination soars to the beat as visitors watch an orchestrated performance of lights dancing in harmony with festive music. It’s easy to bask in this display for hours, awestruck by the rhythms and illuminated spectacle unfolding before your eyes.

Pueblo West Goes Gaga for Lights: Easton’s Win Inaugural “Light Fight”

Calling all holiday light enthusiasts! Pueblo West has a new champion – the Easton family! At 1169 S. Nichols Road, their dazzling display took first place in the metro district’s inaugural “Light Fight,” a festive competition showcasing the best private Christmas light displays across town. What did the winning display entail? Imagine a winter wonderland bathed in the warm glow of classic white lights. The Easton’s home wasn’t the only star of the show – twinkling lights adorned the surrounding Aspen and Pine trees, casting a magical ambiance. In addition to their massive display of canned goods, you’ll find unique toys and sweet treats, just to name a bit of what they offer.

If you’re looking for simple, activities for kids fun, Harvest Days in Pueblo is the BEST way to kick off fall! We had an absolute blast picking out pumpkins this year. The patch is large, with every size and shape imaginable – it took forever (in the best way!) to find the perfect one for our jack-o’-lantern. The corn maze was no joke either – those stalks are perfect for young ones! We got a little turned around (okay, maybe a lot!), but it was so much fun navigating our way out together. Kids of all ages will delight in meeting and interacting with the friendly farm animals in the petting zoo.
